Common Problems with Vehicle Decal Wraps and How to Fix Them

Whether for business promotional or aesthetic purposes, wraps are a slick and inexpensive alternative to custom paint jobs. However, wrapping a vehicle isn’t without its drawbacks, like all things that are changed on the exterior of an automobile. Decals can be installed poorly at times; they can weather, and they can be subjected to other variables that will affect their lifespan and look. In this blog, we will review some common issues with vehicle wraps and discuss solutions and best practices for each issue.

Peeling at the Edges

The most common issue vehicle wraps experience is peeling along the edges of wraps, particularly with curves, door handles, and wheel wells. In most cases, this is due to improper surface preparation, poor adhesive contact, or improper installation techniques. When taking care of this problem, always thoroughly clean the surface before application, and make sure it is free of any moisture, wax, or debris before applying the decal to the vehicle. During installation, don’t skimp on using a heat gun to heat the surface of the vehicle, and also press the wrap into place using a squeegee to help push the wrap into tight spots and help activate the heat-sensitive adhesive. If it has already begun to peel, you can reheat the affected area, add pressure to the wrap with a squeegee and reapply it, or cut the affected area out and replace it to avoid further damage to that section.

Bubbling Under the Surface

Bubbles can periodically form under an auto wrap when air is trapped during installation or because of outgassing from the paint on a vehicle before the installation, which is an initial adverse consequence for the quality of the smoothness of the wrap as well as may impact the early deterioration of the wrap. Bubbles should have no place in the installation process; however, if the installer is vigilant, they should understand some basic techniques to avoid bubbles occurring. Installers can avoid bubbles occurring by effectively utilizing standard installation methods, inclusive of overlap with squeegee strokes and applying wraps in smaller sections. If during the wrapping process, bubbles are formed and stuck, this can often be remedied by using a pin to puncture the bubble to gently release the air and then, using a soft cloth, push out any remaining air.

Color Fading or Discoloration

With time, a vehicle wrap may fade through exposure to weather events or harmful sunlight conditions. UV rays will primarily cause a wrap to fade as well; bright and dark backgrounds seem to show signs of fade or discoloration before lighter shades do. To fix or prevent fading from occurring, the best way to avoid this type of issue is to select high-quality wrap material resistant to UV and encapsulating laminate to preserve and be aware of what kind of wavelengths and rays are being introduced to the vehicle wrap. Regularly washing the vehicle after long exposure to dirty conditions is a good near-term remedy, and parking in shaded or protected areas to help extend the wrap life is useful. However, if a vehicle wrap has significantly faded, doing a section or complete replacement is likely the best option to help restore the vehicle’s original luster, and it will have the most appropriate impact on the brand style aspects.

Poor Adhesion in Cold Weather

Cracks and tears typically happen when a wrap gets brittle because of excessive sun exposure, extreme temperatures, or aging. These examples often can be found on older wraps that were not properly cared for. To prevent cracking, select vinyl wraps that are rated for durability, and remember to care for them safely—low dilutions of cleaning chemicals are preferred. Do not use harsh chemicals or rough materials while washing. Cracks and tears are easily repairable—isolated smaller damaged areas are sometimes able to be patched with similar vinyl, but larger areas such as the full hood or several panels would generally require the full replacement to have a seamless look.

The Finale

Vehicle wraps can provide dramatic flexibility and aesthetics, but they need to be looked after and maintained to continue looking their best. Having an understanding of peeling, bubbling, cracking, fading, etc., will allow you to take preventative measures or take action on time, if necessary. By purchasing high-quality materials, engaging quality installations, and performing regular maintenance on a car wrap, many of the problems identified can be prevented or extended time until the damage occurs. Regardless, your car wrap is a reflection of your attitude either toward brand awareness or self-expression; proper care will ensure that you are getting the most pop on the road.
